Mission of the CRCPHP
To partner with communities in participatory research that promotes the health of multiethnic communities at the Arizona-Sonora, Mexico border. The Center focuses on interventions to prevent chronic disease through community action to change behavior, policy, and the environment.

Goals
The overall goal of the CRCPHP is to contribute to the field of intervention science in chronic disease prevention and control and thereby contribute to the reduction of health disparities and improvement in health status of multiethnic communities primarily in the U.S.-Mexico border region.

A closely related goal is to make a significant contribution to the application and evaluation of participatory research strategies in these communities.

To reach these goals, the following objectives will guide our research:

  • Develop, implement and evaluate community-based behavioral interventions in diabetes prevention and control with secondary foci on its risk factors (e.g., obesity) and concurrent barriers to prevention and control (e.g., depression);
  • Implement a comprehensive diabetes prevention and control intervention focusing on physical activity and nutrition in a border community;
  • Implement and evaluate the impact of participatory community coalitions (Local and Regional Community Action Boards) on policy change and the sustainability of behavioral interventions; and
  • Develop, implement and evaluate methods to enhance the scope and impact of community health workers.
